Why do birds nest under solar panels?
The gap between a panel and the roof is warm, sheltered and out of sight. To a pigeon or a sparrow it looks like a good place to raise young. Once one pair settles in, others often follow.
What problems do birds cause?
Droppings and nest material collect under and on the panels. They dirty the glass, and over time droppings can corrode metal. Nests can pile up around wiring, and they’re hard to clear once they’re packed in. Birds can also be noisy and messy around your roof and patio.
How do you proof an array?
We use three humane tools, and which one fits depends on your roof and your panels.
Mesh goes around the edge of the array and closes off the gap under the panels so birds can’t get in. Spikes go on ledges and spots where birds like to perch, so they can’t land comfortably. Netting covers larger areas that need a barrier.
None of these harm birds. They keep birds from getting in or settling.
Do you clean before proofing?
Yes. We clean the panels and clear any nesting debris first, then install the proofing. That way nothing gets trapped beneath it, and the mesh goes onto a clean surface. Our solar panel cleaning covers the cleaning, and we can do both on one visit.
How does the assessment work?
It’s free. We look at your array and roof, or you can send photos, and we recommend what we’d use. You’ll get an estimate with it. There’s no obligation.
Can you work on tile roofs and two-story homes?
Yes. We work on the roof, we’re insured, and we step carefully, especially on tile. Tell us the roof type and the number of stories when you contact us.
How much does bird proofing cost?
The number of panels and the length of perimeter to cover are the main factors. The roof type and the number of stories play a part, and so does how much nesting debris and dropping buildup there is to clear first. Estimates are free.
What else can you do on the same visit?
Window cleaning, house washing and gutter cleaning all work well alongside bird proofing, especially if birds have been dirtying the roof edge.
